ABOUT US

What issue will your venture address?

In 2008, over 1000 citizens died in post-election violence that tore apart the otherwise-peaceful fabric of Kenyan society, and with reports of arms buildups and rising tensions surfacing more frequently, the prospect for a peaceful 2012 elections appears dim. Sisi ni Amani aims to catalyze and connect a network of independent peace actors and initiatives across all of Kenya to help prevent election violence in 2012. Building on the courageous work of Kenyans, Sisi ni Amani will add value to the disconnected movement for peaceful democratic transitions by raising awareness about their work and providing opportunities for publicity and networking.

Why are you pursuing this specific issue?

During her semester abroad in Kenya, Rachel was amazed and impressed by the various peace initiatives, ranging from individual grafitti artists to NGOs working on a national scale. She was taken by the courage and passion of the individuals who dedicated their time, often at great risk, to prevent future violence, but noticed that these initiatives were often overlooked and disconnected. The need for a project like Sisi ni Amani was apparent, and with the subsequent commitment of Cody, who was long interested in technology and democracy in Kenya, the project was born.

How will your venture solve this problem?

By using a groundbreaking yet proven method for crowdsourcing and mapping peace initiatives online and a series of nationally distributed film vignettes of these peace initiatives, Sisi ni Amani will raise awareness about the peace movement in Kenya. With our open source peace-mapping platform, Sisi ni Amani will enable individual citizens to access, join, and build upon this peace network as it coalesces into a movement that transcends the sum of its parts. In addition, we will host focus groups and capacity-building workshops among Kenya’s peace actors to build crucial relationships and share common experiences.
