| Description: | Bill went to work for the Animal Breeding Research Organisation (now the Roslin Institute) after college. On this farm he carried out many of the scientific measurements on sheep cattle and pigs as well as carrying out farm duties, including lambing of sheep.
It was at this farm in the Scottish borders that he began working towards a BA Honours Degree, and developed his interest in Science. A position in the Institutes surgery arose in 1986 and after a period of training Bill took up the position of anaesthetist where he anaesthetised sheep, cattle, pigs and deer for the experiments that were being carried out at that time. In 1989 the opportunity arose for Bill to gain some experience in embryology and equipment for micromanipulation became available. With little training he developed techniques for manipulation and successfully produced his first cloned lamb in the early 90’s, and went on to be the senior embryologist in the following experiments: 1994 Began manipulating cultured cells 1995 The first cloned animals from cultured cells (Morag and Megan) 1996 The first cloned animal from adult cells (Dolly) 1997 The first cloned animals from transgenic cells (Polly) 2001 The first cloned animal with a knocked out gene 2002 The first cloned pig in Europe. |
