Thomas M. Loarie is Chairman and CEO of Mercator MedSystems, Inc. (San Leandro, CA.) where he is leading a team of engineers and clinicians in the development of products designed for use by interventional specialists to treat vascular disease. The company’s initial treatment focus is neointimal hyperplasia, more commonly known as restenosis, a vascular proliferative disease that frequently follows primary mechanical treatments to reduce vascular blockage due to arteriosclerosis. Mr. Loarie has been an executive in the healthcare industry for 34 years serving also as co-founder & Chairman, CardioProfile, Inc.; CEO & Chairman of KeraVision, Inc.; COO of Novacor, Inc.; and President of American Heyer-Schulte (a Div of American Hospital Supply, now Baxter, Inc.) respectively. Mr. Loarie has raised over $180 million for development stage companies he has led.
He serves as Director on the Board of Trustees for the Graduate Theological Union (Berkeley, CA.); as Director, Clarity, Inc. (Pleasanton, CA.); as member, University of California’s Department of Mechanical Engineering Advisory Board (Berkeley, CA); as member, Advisory Board, CalStar - Air Shock & Trauma (Sacramento, CA); and as member, Society of Industry Leaders (Standard & Poors). He has also served as Assistant Professor of Surgery at Creighton University Medical School, lecturing on medical technology and public policy; as Chairman-elect, Board Member, and member of the Executive Committee of the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed); as a Board Member of the California Healthcare Institute; as an Advisory Board member for Occulogix, Inc., and as guest lecturer in UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, and Pepperdine University’s Graziadio School of Business.
Mr. Loarie received his B.S.M.E. from the University of Notre Dame, and participated in graduate business studies at the Universities of Minnesota and Chicago. He has lectured and written extensively on medical technology innovation and its implications for health care public policy, including articles in the Wall Street Journal, Royal Academy of Engineering World Technology Update, the Journal of Applied Manufacturing Systems, and the Journal of Refractive Surgery. He has appeared on PBS, CNBC, and the Discovery Channel. He is presently writing a book for entrepreneurs based on his venture experience in the medical technology field.
