| Employer: | Northrop Grumman Mission Systems |
| Position: | J2EE Architect, Designer & Advisor |
| Time period: | September 2002 - June 2003 |
| Description: | - Led the Java/XML effort for the (proposed) migration of a HTML/Perl/CGI application to an enterprise J2EE content/knowledge management application that would have facilitated collaborative activities.
- Maintained and deployed the demo version of the new Java web application functionality on an SSL-enabled instance of the iPlanet Web Server. The new Java web application functionality included document upload and enterprise search components, both of which leverage Jakarta Struts. - Created common application functionality that was utilized by all Java application processes. Functionality created includes the core objects of the application, the Document Value Object and the Document Data Access Object. It also includes user session management capabilities for the web application. - Led the interaction between the Oracle9i (9.2.0) database and Java, primarily utilizing JDBC and stored procedures. - Developed the multi-threaded cable ingest process that identifies cables in a directory and efficiently processes them, i.e. parses and inserts them into the database. Also created error-handling process for cables that identifies and logs any errors in the process and copies the culpable cable to an error directory for human processing. This process was used to process over 1,000,000 cables. - Proposed the migration (to Java and XML) of the legacy cable parser process currently written in C. This migration would have reduced the redundant processing of cables, allowed for the program to leverage the Oracle database's XMLType and improved the overall performance of the cable parsing process. - Mentored team members on Oracle JDeveloper9i, the J2EE environment and J2EE/Java best approaches and practices and coding standards. - Provided guidance to task leaders on the design and architecture of new J2EE functionality (using the Struts framework) in the current application. - Continually discovered opportunities for application and performance improvement through the use of design patterns (J2EE and GoF) and best practices (aka refactoring). - Prepared and configured the J2EE development environment. Also, configured sccs as the initial configuration management tool. |

Also demonstrated that serialization of objects was possible through the Web Service. - Researched and recommended Web Services (and SOAP), which was accepted as the method of communication between the Java application client front-end (View) through WebStart and the application back-end (Controller) that connects to the application EJBs (Model) in WebLogic. - Conducted redesign research and recommended the MVC/J2EE architecture for the next iteration of the application.
