CASE DESCRIPTIONS:
CASE #1 - Interactive displays with touch screens
Alex Olwal
alx@csc.kth.se
Public displays with touch screens are abundant today. However, the current technologies offer limited interactivity. This new technology includes several elements that make displays more interactive. One of the key technologies is an improved touch screen solution that allows a more detailed interaction with the screen. This technology increases the potential for user interaction and interesting applications exist in many fields.
CASE #2 - Context specific information using mobile phones
Alex Olwal
alx@csc.kth.se
Everyone carries a mobile phone, there are static information displays practically everywhere, and wireless Internet is available in almost all locations. Combine these elements and you can develop very powerful applications. This concept is called Augmented Reality. This new technology is based on a tracking system that allows mobile phones to interact with information displays and collect context specific information. In other words, you can get more information about the place or object that you point your mobile to. This technology holds great potential in a number of applications.
CASE #3 - Nano- and micro-porous surface structure

Richard Furberg - KTH
Richard.Furberg@energy.kth.se
Heat is energy and heating and cooling are energy intense processes. In many applications these processes account for a large proportion of the total energy consumption. This newly developed nano- and micro-porous surface structure can improve heating and cooling in a number of applications and can thus help save much energy. By applying the surface structure in some applications the technology can enhance the overall energy performance by 60-100%.

Ericsson Betatest IMS Platform
Ericsson provide an open Beta-test platform for application development, with access from all Swedish 3G networks. The challenge for you is to come up with ideas of new Service Blends that potentially could be developed on top of this platform, and to investigate their business opportunities. With a "Service Blend" we mean a new mobile/Internet application that combines typical Internet services with the communication functionality provided by the Ericsson Beta-test platform. Examples of possible Service Blends include virtual, persistent games, health monitoring, sell/buy services, and photo blogs with positioning. The more communication intensive your Service Blend is, the bigger the advantage of the Ericsson Beta-test platform.
CASE #5 - SOLAR TRACKING SYSTEM
Download the POWERPOINT: http://excitera@excitera.intraq.net/Case_5_EIC_2008.ppt
Karim Najar -KTH
karim.najar@sth.kth.se
Solar tracking systems increase the efficiency of all applications based on incoming sunrays. One obvious example is in solar energy generation where sun tracking can increase the efficiency with up to 35-40%. This innovative solar tracking technology is based on a mechanical construction that allows a solar panel, mirror, or any other suitable object to be directed towards to the sun all through the day. Making better use of daylight and sunshine can have a big impact on the energy efficiency and energy generation in a number of applications. The versatility and comparatively low cost of this technology can make it interesting in a number of applications.
CASE #6 - Holographic display for 3D visualisation
Download the POWERPOINT: http://excitera@excitera.intraq.net/Case_6_EIC_2008.ppt
Jonny Gustafsson - KTH
jonny.gustafsson@iip.kth.se
Visualisation is key in countless applications today. Normally we see visualisations on screens, regardless of whether they are in 2D or 3D. However, 3D visualisation on a flat screen has limitations and this problem is hard to get around. This innovative holographic display technology can give real time 3D holographic visualisations which could be useful in a number of different applications. Unlike many other 3D technologies there is no need for special glasses or other extra equipment.
CASE #7 - Operator independent peer-to-peer networks for mobile phones
Download the POWERPOINT: http://excitera@excitera.intraq.net/Case_7_EIC_2008.pdf
Gunnar Karlsson - KTH
gk@kth.se
Mobile phones and other mobile devices with a number of different communication capabilities are abundant today. In the way they are used today they primarily communicate with each other via a network provided by a mobile phone or Internet operator. This innovative technology instead allows for direct communication and transfer of information between mobile devices without going through the operator networks. This makes each mobile device a potential sender and receiver of information. This is novel ground and the potential applications for this technology are many.
CASE #8 - Effective information transmission in sensor networks
Download the POWERPOINT: http://excitera@excitera.intraq.net/Case_8_EIC_2008.ppt
Niklas Wernersson - KTH
niklas.wernersson@ee.kth.se
There are several situations where sensors of some sort are connected in a network to measure things or otherwise detect something. This innovative algorithm can make the transfer of information from different sensors more efficient. More efficient information transfer can allow all the parts in the system to run more efficiently and may potentially open up for new innovative uses of the systems. The technology is very general and can therefore be applied to a number of different applications where information is transferred between sensors in a general sense.

Building the bank of the future
The bank offices are rapidly closing in on their expiry date: old
technology has been replaced by new and routines have been exchanged for
possibilities and challenges. Which are the banking services of the 21:st
century? How does one combine the need for security with that for
technological flexibility?

Competition Rules - EIC 2008
1. Excitera Innovaton Challenge is open for university students from Sweden.
2. You compete in teams of up to three people.
3. All competing teams have to sign a contract of confidentiality if the research requires this.
4. The researcher owns the rights to produced innovation plan based on his research.
5. The prize-sum will go to the competing team
All submitted entries to the competition will be considered confidential and will be treated such throughout the competition. Competing team can choose to publish the innovation plan when the competition is finished.
Your innovation plan is a document that describes idea together with a thorough market analysis of competing products and companies.
The purpose with the innovation plan is to explain to the researcher how his or her research could be implemented and estimate the market potential of your idea. The focus is on market analysis and the packaging of your product or service, rather than a complete launch strategy.
Submitting Innovation Plans
You and all the members of your team should resgister at www.eic2008.se
We use a service called YouNoodle.com. It’s a social community for business plan competitions, with tools an functoinality for safely submitting business plans and for the jury to anonomously judge the business plans.
Each team should also create a team page (use the “add a startup” button)
You can also dowload the competition rules here: http://younoodle.com/competitions/excitera_innovation_cha...

Background and history
In the academic year 2002/2003 Excitera Innovation challenge (EIC) was started at KTH, inspired by on the MIT competition "$50K". The competition format - writing an innovation plan - with continuous events for inspiration and training became trend-setting for all Excitera activities. More than 30 teams participated the first year and the various events were attended by a total of 1500 people. Two of the projects within EIC grow so much that they were turned into separate competitions; Swedish Game Awards (SGA) and Excitera Mobile Award (later renamed Charon)
To develop a unique concept that would differ Excitera Innovation Challenge from other business plan competitions, a new strategy was formed during the semester 2003/2004. Instead of having the participants writing innovation plans based on their own business ideas, Excitera would now invite researchers to present one or more exciting new research results, from which the students was encouraged to come up with concepts for new applications and write an innovation plan. This development in strategy gave more room for the other Excitera competitions and strengthened the research profile of Excitera Innovation Challenge. EIC is to this date the project within Excitera that best fulfills the goals and visions of the Excitera association.
