  • 1. CUTEC - CUE workshop 11th February: The Investors' Forum

    CUTEC and Cambridge University Entrepreneurs (CUE) collaborate for the first time in the history of both clubs to organize a grand workshop on 11th February, 2009 to provide an insight into how investment criteria change in a time of global economic crisis.

    Venue: Law Faculty, LG18
    Date: 11th February 2009

    Agenda:
    5.45pm Registration
    6:30pm Panel discussion followed by Q&A's
    8.00pm Networking session, Food & Drinks

    Panelists:
    * Alex Van Someren (nCipher) - moderator
    * Kerry Baldwin (IQ Capital)
    * Simon Cook (DFJ Espirit)
    * Laurence John (Amadeus)
    * Reshma Sohoni (SeedCamp)
    * Sitar Teli (Doughty Hanson Tech Ventures)

    The current economic climate poses significant challenges for budding entrepreneurs, but for truly exceptional ideas there is always money. A stellar panel of early-stage investors, who have funds available currently, will explain why they think it is still a good time to invest, as well as how the crisis affects their strategy through addressing such questions as:

    -Where do investors place their money in times of global monetary slowdown?
    -Why entrepreneurship can prosper in such times? Is there a common pattern in past recession success stories?
    -How can a start-up accommodate strategically an economic crisis?
    -How can you recession-proof your business plan?

    Your Research to Business: How to Protect Your Research Idea.
    "Learn about Intellectual Property, Listen on Live Case Studies."

    IP is the cardinal substance in your research idea. This differentiates your idea from other non-research ideas. But without you knowing IP, your idea is just like any other ideas. Come now and learn more about IP. Who is better to tell you that than Mr. Ian Harvey, Chairman of Intellectual Property Institute and Dr Anne Lane, Executive Director of UCL Business.

    With the opening address by Prof Mike Spyer (UCL Vice Provost Enterprise), Ian will introduce IP to us and followed by real-life UCL case studies elaborated by Anne.

    Date: Wed 28 Jan 2009
    Time: 6.30pm (sharp)
    Venue: Room 106, Roberts Building, UCL (talks); Eng Front Foyer (networking)

    Just sign up at events@uclenterprise.org

    Everyone is welcome; especially you who need to know more about IP from these prominent figures in the field. Event will end with networking drinks and light snacks.

    This event is targeted to Research students (PhD or MRes) or postdocs that are interested in translating their research to a commercialable entity.

  • 5. Dragons' Den 2009

    As 2009 approaches we have been asked by the BBC to let you know that they are now working on a new series of the award winning “Dragons' Den”. The search is on for business ideas, inventions or products with serious business potential that are investment ready and looking for funding. The show continues to offer entrepreneurs from across the country the chance to make their business dreams come true.

    Dragons’ Den is a challenging place to pitch but it’s also a genuine business opportunity to secure investment. In the most recent series, 14 entrepreneurs received offers of investment in the Den, and plenty more have gone on to find success even without the backing of the dragons.

    Entrepreneurs wanting to apply can do so via email to dragonsden@bbc.co.uk or by visiting the website- details of which appear on both the attached flyer and press release.

    If you have any further questions, please contact Julann Smith, Assistant Producer. Her email address is Julann.Smyth@bbc.co.uk and phone number is 020 8576 1194.
