The annual Big Bang! Entrepreneurs’ Grill will be help on Wednesday, January 27th 2009 from 7pm-9pm in the Buehler Alumni Center on the UC Davis campus. For those new to the business pitch and entrepreneurship world, the “E-Grill” is your chance to see two established companies pitch their business plans to a panel of judges and venture capitalists. Experience what it is really like to pitch a business plan to a public audience. Refreshments will be provided.
The BigBang! Legal and IP workshop began with Raj Gururajan from the Technology Transfer Office at UC Davis. He spoke of UC Davis’s commitment to innovation and heavy investment in research and broke down the process of new invention to commercial profit from an Intellectual Property standpoint. UC Davis has earned several million dollars because of its intellectual property alone and holds patents on such products as strawberries and its logo trademarked.
To share with us their legal know-how was Kevin Coyle and Scott Pink from a local office of DLA Piper LLP. DLA Piper is global law firm that not only sponsors the BigBang! Business Plan Competition, but Kevin Coyle also awards $5000 in legal services to the winners of the competition. That being said Coyle and Pink shared their experience in a wide variety of topics, namely: the importance of establishing a business structure that is appropriate given taxation consideration and liability concerns, how to protect intellectual property from a legal standpoint, and what can and cannot be trademarked.
